The Right Whale Sonar Training Issue

On Wednesday, November 12, 2008 the Supreme Court ruled that U.S. Navy is allowed to conduct sonar-training exercises off the southern California coast without restrictions designed to protect whales, dolphins and other marine mammals.

The decision consigned 37 species of marine mammals, including sea lions and endangered blue whales, to certain peril. This unconscionable ruling could well expand the scope of the East Coast training facilities that the Navy proposes, including a massive sonar training range along the ocean bottom between North Carolina and Florida.

The right whale is a 40-ton, 50-foot-long creature that whalers virtually eradicated in the 19th century. Fewer than 400 are known to exist - a number so perilously low that researchers consider every living right whale vital to the survival of the species. The whales spend their winters in the waters of Georgia and northeast Florida, raising their young. It is the only known calving grounds for the right whale.

In 2000 a mass stranding of whales on the beaches of the Bahamas was linked to U.S. Navy exercises using mid-frequency sonar. Many of the beached whales died, bleeding from the ears and brain. Sonar produces intense sound waves that probe the ocean to reveal underwater objects. The waves spread tens and even hundreds of miles and create ear-splitting noise comparable to rocket blasts. Navy sonar, in fact, reaches 235 decibels - the Saturn V rocket launch registered 220. Even low-frequency sonar affects whale behavior, and mid-frequency sonar can be lethal.

Still, the U.S. Navy proposes to construct a sonar range off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. The planned site is 625 square miles. This, if allowed, will result in the signing of a death warrant for the right whale.

Though, of course, we do appreciate our country’s concerns for security, we implore you to prevent the mass devastation of the right whales, loggerhead turtles and manatees (among other species).
The time is now for Georgia’s leaders – and the leaders of our nation – to deliver a clear message to the world: “We are compassionate. We are of the earth. We will work as one to protect the fragile creatures that share this planet with us”. Do not allow this ill-advised and callous plan to form the environmental legacy of our country.

St. Marys EarthKeepers Host First Annual Celebration

ST. Marys, GA—In recognition of the one-year anniversary of bringing curbside recycling to St. Marys and the success of other initiatives, St. Marys EarthKeepers is hosting a special celebration event on October 28, 2008. The public is encouraged to attend the event which will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the City Economic Building at 400 Osborne Street.

The agenda for the evening includes entertainment, information, and inspiration as well as complimentary refreshments.

Children will be an integral part of the event line-up as St. Marys EarthKeepers prepare to launch a Junior EarthKeepers division. A musical performance by elementary school students, student project presentations, a Cumberland Island wilderness tour update, Go Green Osprey report, discussion of EarthKeepers accomplishments and goals, and a stirring presentation from Mother Earth herself are all part of the evening's festivities.
The gathering will culminate with a brainstorming session that encourages the community's input for better Earthkeeping in St. Marys and surrounding areas.

According to St. Marys EarthKeepers chair, Frank Quinby, the event is designed to get the community involved in efforts that will ultimately make all residents better Earth stewards.

"Our vision has always been to create a community that is sensitive to the needs of an increasingly threatened environment and address those needs in a timely and effective manner," Quinby stated.

For more information about St. Marys EarthKeepers, visit www.stmarysearthkeepers.com. Interested parties are encouraged to call 912-729-1103 with ideas about how to help develop Coastal Georgia into an excellent example of a sustainable green community.

Become an official Earthkeeper

Thank you for your interest and support. The St. Marys EarthKeepers
have attained a gratifying level of success within the community due
to the commitment of people like you: people who are aware of the
fragile nature of our environment and are willing and eager to
demonstrate their good stewardship by effecting positive change.

Curbside recycling is now a reality in St. Marys, and this represents
a massive step forward for us all. Increasingly, neighboring
communities are contacting the EarthKeepers for support and guidance
as they strive to implement recycling programs of their own. The
ripple-effect of Change is a formidable force and, once citizens
witness the benefits of being proactive, the sense of empowerment and
pride serves to propel us into a promising future.

But there is much still to be done. Education is an on-going process:
educating our children, our commercial sector, tomorrow's leaders and
our community. Though the recycling compliance rate is extraordinary
high (for which we can all be proud), we still have a long road to
travel.

The EarthKeepers' presence at festivals, special events, City Hall,
our schools, and work-places serves to remind us all of our shared
responsibilities as global citizens. Change comes from within. It
begins in our own homes and hearts – and the joining of hands within
our communities.

The St. Marys EarthKeepers is a grass-roots organization that was
born of the love of our unique local environment. As are all such
entities and organizations, St. Marys EarthKeepers' genesis is found
in the sharing of thoughts and ideas…and we warmly welcome your
participation.

Our goals are:

• To work within the community to identify areas of environmental
concern.
• To inform all members of the community as to the nature of these
concerns and the planned approach to addressing them.
• To work closely with local, state and federal associations,
agencies and groups in order that we may better affect positive
environmental change.
• To plan and participate in special events and activities that
celebrate and preserve the environmental quality of St. Marys.
• To promote results-oriented public-interest activism that protects
and enhances the environment of St. Marys.

We invite you to join us as we move into a brighter tomorrow. Your
membership in the St. Marys EarthKeepers means that you are given a
voice—and the tools to change the path of the future.

Please visit our website at www.stmarysearthkeepers.com . Here you
will find intriguing environmental facts, updated news regarding the
efforts of the EarthKeepers, and a membership form. Membership levels
range from $5 to $5,000, but the knowledge that you're CHANGING THE
WORLD IS PRICELESS! We look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to consider the importance
of your becoming an official EarthKeeper.
Sincerely,
Frank Quinby, Chairm

upcoming events

It's been almost one year since our triumph of bringing curbside
recycling to St. Marys. I'm happy to report that St. Marys is still
experiencing a well above average participation rate. Please make a
note of two upcoming events for the St. Marys EarthKeepers:
1)October 4 Rock Shrimp Festival Parade--Once again, we would love to
show the community our unified spirit and showcase our continued
mission. Please let me know if you can walk or ride in the parade. We
will have several golf carts.
2)October 28-Annual EarthKeepers Gathering at 7 pm in the Economic
Building 400 Osborne Street. I will send out a notice closer to the
date detailing the agenda. We're hoping for a big turnout as we
launch our membership drive. Two items the board has been working on
are: Commercial and school recycling programs.
Best regards to all. Looking forward to seeing everyone in October.

upcoming meeting

Hello Everyone,
I will be trying to put together a meeting for February for all EarthKeepers. We will have quite a few new members who joined during our recycling jubilee. Please let me hear from you all as to what night of the week and what time is best for most people. At our next meeting we should decide how we want to go forward i.e. form a board, start the 501c3 process, creating a website (we already have a blog), creating a project priority list, etc. So, be thinking about all this. And please let me know if you would be interested in a position on the board or would like to suggest someone to serve so I can come to the meeting with some input in that direction. Thanks so much. I'll be in touch after I've heard from y'all.
